Track lighting systems are modular and designed for expansion as long as your circuitry can support the additional wattage. Many connectors are available for your track lighting system. They allow you to turn, add length, add branches, or expand the track in four different directions. Single tracks range in length from 2 to 8 feet and can be cut with a hacksaw for more customization. Expanding your track lighting does not require any additional wiring.
This information tells you the number of fixtures you can add by extending the track. The general track lighting rule is to add no more than one fixture per foot. A 15 amp, 120-volt lighting circuit can support a total of 1,800 watts, but you must deduct 20% of the total wattage to avoid overloading the circuit, so the safe capacity of the lighting circuit is equal to 1,440 watts. A 20-amp, 120-volt lighting circuit supports a total of 2,400 watts but has a safe capacity of 1,920 watts.
Also, note that the further down the track the fixture is connected, the dimmer the light becomes, probably because of the voltage drop. You can add more LED bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs to the extended track than incandescent bulbs because LEDs and CFLs use much less wattage than incandescent bulbs.
Place a non-contact voltage sensor next to the wall switch that operates the track lighting. The sensor will beep and flash if the current is applied to the switch. Place the sensor close to the track to ensure the circuit is broken.
4. Locate the screw at the end of the track where you want to add another track to extend your system. Loosen the screw and pull the end cap out of the track.
5. Insert a straight 90-degree angle, "T" or four-way connector into the end of the existing track. Insert a section of track over the connector.
6. View the mounting holes inside the new track. Mark each mounting hole on the ceiling. Disconnect the track from the connector.
7. Screw screw type 1" hollow wall threaded anchors into the ceiling at each mounting hole location. If installing into ceiling joists, attach a 1/8 in. drill bit to the drill to create a pilot hole in the ceiling.
8. Reconnect the new track to the connector. Mount the track to the ceiling using the screws included with the anchors. If installing to ceiling joists, use 1" wood screws.
9. Insert the end cap you removed from the original track into the end of the new track. Tighten the screws on the end caps to hold them in place.
10. Insert the light bulb into the new lighting fixture. Install your fixtures anywhere on the track. Turn on the track lighting circuit breaker.
