What is linear track lighting?

Linear track lighting consists of straight or linear track sections of varying lengths. Tracks are typically 4 feet or 8 feet long. This is the type of track lighting that most people are familiar with and it is fully configurable so you can get the exact look you want for your room space.

Track lighting accessories feature an elegant and modern design that is different from regular track lighting, which is linear or rectangular in shape. They are the perfect complement to projects that require unique elements within them.

You connect the track with different components and use elbow-shaped parts for turning. There are also T-connectors, so you can run the track in a different direction than the main span.

Different companies make linear tracks of certain lengths under their own brand names. When shopping, remember to buy the same brand of linear track components to make sure they work with each other.

Each track layout needs to terminate at the track feed. This assembly is sold separately from the linear components and is attached to the ceiling junction box. The track feed provides the connection that powers the complete operation of the track.

To figure out how much linear track you need, measure your space. Then plan how you want to arrange the track and where to light it to place the lights. From here you can determine which tracks you will need.

For lights, a good rule of thumb is to use one per foot of track. You can reduce the amount used to suit your individual needs.
